ὄστρακον, τό, die harte Schale des Eies. Die Schale der Schaltiere, Krebse, Muscheln, Schildkröten. Gewöhnlich ein Gefäß von gebranntem Ton, übh. alles aus Ton Gemachte; von der Muse des Euripides ποῦ ' στὶν ἡ τοῖς ὀστράκοις αὕτη κροτοῦσα, die auf, mit Töpfen Musik macht, was auf den schlechten Klang gehen muß; ὀστράκου με-ταπεσόντος, geht auf das unter ὀστρακίνδα erwähnte Spiel, fast wie unser 'das Blatt hat sich gewandt'. Bes. auch die Scherbe od. das irdene Täfelchen, worauf bei Gericht abgestimmt wurde, und welches vorzugsweise in dem Scherbengerichte, wo es sich um Verbannung eines zu mächtigen Bürgers handelte, gebraucht wurde -
